Out of the five Windows viruses I ran under Wine, not a single one was able to send email and propagate itself. When I went out of my way to be part of the Windows community by doing my part to propagate Windows viruses (lots of Windows users seem to think this is important, seeing as how they run random executables and use Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer) I discovered that it couldn't easily be done with GNU/Linux tools. Oh sure, I could manually forward these viruses to the folks in my address book, but where's the fun in that? Besides, these viruses usually lie in the From: line and use a handful of different Subject: lines. As a GNU/Linux user, I really don't want to miss out on these important functionalities.
I tip my hat to the creators of the SomeFool virus, for actually (albeit temporarily and minimally) affecting my Linux experience. However, if that's the most damage I can get by running viruses with Wine under a dummy account, then it's clear that the Wine developers have a long way to go before Wine is truly Windows compatible.
"n a development project currently going on, we do plan to use an usb steering wheel for controlling an system by using its input.
The device used is a "Logitech G27 Force Feedback Racing Wheel".
Connected to the computer running Ubuntu Linux 10.04, it is detected and connected to /dev/input/js*.
$ usb-devices T: Bus=02 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=01 Cnt=02 Dev#= 3 Spd=12 MxCh= 0 D: Ver= 2.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=16 #Cfgs= 1 P: Vendor=046d ProdID=c294 Rev=12.38 S: Product=G27 Racing Wheel C: #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=80 MxPwr=98mA I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=03(HID ) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=usbhid
$ lsusb Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:c294 Logitech, Inc. Driving Force
Using jstest (included in package "joystick" under Ubuntu Linux) i'm yet able to monitor a lot of the input signals send by the wheel:
$ jstest --normal /dev/input/js1 Driver version is 2.1.0. Joystick (G27 Racing Wheel) has 4 axes (X, Y, Hat0X, Hat0Y) and 12 buttons (Trigger, ThumbBtn, ThumbBtn2, TopBtn, TopBtn2, PinkieBtn, BaseBtn, BaseBtn2, BaseBtn3, BaseBtn4, BaseBtn5, BaseBtn6). Testing ... (interrupt to exit) Axes: 0: 0 1: 0 2: 0 3: 0 Buttons: 0: off 1: off 2: off 3: off 4: off 5: off 6: off 7: off 8: off 9: off 10: off 11: off
The H-clutch is completely missing from this inputs as well as the first of the three pedals.
Beyond that, i've noticed, that force feedback limited the wheel steering range to ~ 90 degrees in both directions.
Doing some searches on the WWW, i've found out that this is due to the compatibility mode in which the wheel sets itself when connected to a computer not running the proper drivers.
I wasn't able to get any force feedback function of the wheel to work yet, although using Ubuntu 10.04, force feedback is by default enabled in the kernel, but the /dev/input file system is missing entries for the G27.
What i would like to know is:
- how to enable the "extended mode" of the G27 (like in the G25 before, see here )
- how to read all of the possible inputs of the device, that is, all of the buttons
- how to enable and use the force feedback functionality of the device
- all of the above listed points using (Ubuntu) Linux
Maybe someone of the technical staff at Logitech could spare some time and share some wisdom about this device with me ?
I highly appreciate any further information and hints on this topic."
